With the tie both the Spartans and the Golden Hurricane move to 1-0-1 this season.
"I like the team I mean we pass the ball and play together as a team. I felt in the final third I think some players just wanted it too much and tried to do a little bit too much on their own, and you've got to trust your teammates. When we play good soccer like we did Friday night, I really enjoy being around this team; they were good. I will say this for our guys, the effort was good you know, and we worked hard. This team shows up every day. It's a good group you know it's not the worst thing to have a win and a tie against two quality American Athletic opponents so well take that and move forward to another week," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said.
Tulsa had the first scoring opportunity in the 15th minute with a blast from Gilles Kuhler that was corralled by senior goalkeeper Jimmy Hague. The save was one of four that Hague would make on the day and the best scoring chance by either team in the first half.
The MSU offense was led by upperclassmen in the first half with junior forward Giuseppe Barone having two shots blocked. Senior forward Ryan Sierakowski and DeJuan Jones both first-half attempts.
In the second half, MSU was able to create chances with four corner kicks in the half. During the 110 minute game, the Spartans had 12 corner kicks to Tulsa's one. Neither team was able to find the game-winning goal in the first 90 minutes as the teams headed to their first overtime games of the season.
Redshirt-freshman defender Nick Woodruff had a great chance for his first collegiate goal in the 102nd minute after the corner kick off the foot of freshman midfielder Jack Beck. The shot not could not slip past TU goalkeeper Clark Cooper.
Hague started the season with his second-straight clean sheet, picking up right where he left off last season. He earned his 20th career shutout, which ties him for fourth on the Spartans' career shutout list, tying him with Spartan great Reid Friedrichs (1993-96). Hague earned Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year honors in 2017,while Friedrichs was B1G Player of the Year in 1996.
The Spartans continue their season-long four-game homestand on Friday, Aug. 31 against Canisius at 3 p.m. Michigan State will play the final home game of the stretch in a Labor Day battle against UC Riverside on Monday, Sept. 3 at 1 p.m.
