
van der Weij Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

van der Weij scored the game-winning goal against Kent State on Sunday
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State field hockey freshman Isa van der Weij has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week as announced by the conference on Monday.
van der Weij has been a key component of the Spartan offense in 2018 finishing each of her first two collegiate games with three shots taken. Against Kent State on Sunday, August 26, van der Weij registered three shots on goal and come up clutch for Michigan State scoring the game-winning goal in the 77th minute.
Nike Lorenz (Maryland) was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and Cori Conley (Penn State) earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the week honors.
This is the first time a Michigan State field hockey player has won a Big Ten Player of the Week award since Kendal Anderson was tabbed as the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on September 6, 2016. Allie Ahern was the last Spartan to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Week (October 18, 2011).
MSU is back in action on Friday, August 31 for a 5 p.m. road match-up against defending national champion UConn. The Huskies are 2-0 to open the 2018 season with victories over No. 12-ranked Northwestern and No. 15-ranked Stanford.
