Freshman forward Camryn Evans scored her fifth, and sixth goals of the season.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Freshman forward Camryn Evans put away her fifth and sixth goals of the season, and Michigan State women's soccer began Big Ten play by earning a valuable road point in a 2-2 draw Thursday at Purdue.
The Spartans (5-1-2, 0-0-1 Big Ten) battled a tough Boilermaker side all game, and held a 2-1 advantage before Purdue (5-1-2, 0-0-1 Big Ten) found an equalizer on a rebound in the 87th minute.
"That's a very good team, so getting a point at their place in a Big Ten opener is something to build on for sure," MSU head coach Tom Saxton said. "We showed great character for a young team, and this result was well earned."
How It Happened: The Boilermakers were the aggressor early on, holding possession and finding chances to take the lead in the first 20 minutes, in what was the first Big Ten action for several young Spartans.
MSU started to settle in and turn the tide, ultimately breaking through in the 26th minute. Sophomore midfielder Danielle Stephan saw Evans with room to run and played a pretty ball over the top to the freshman. After Purdue goalkeeper Marisa Bova stopped Evans' first attempt, she stayed with it and put home the rebound to give Michigan State a 1-0 lead.
The Boilermakers found their first answer in the 37th minute, when Ena Sabanagic got one past redshirt-junior keeper Reilley Ott to the right post, knotting the score at 1-1, and that was how the two sides entered the break.
The Spartans got their legs back under them and looked the more confident side early on in the second half, finding the second goal in the 49th minute. Junior midfielder Hannah Jones played a ball to open space that bounced off a Purdue defender and allowed Evans to start a breakaway to goal. She used her speed to get past the Boilermaker defenders and beat Bova 1v1 with a strike far post, making it 2-1.
MSU held the lead until late, thanks to great defensive clears from redshirt-junior Michaela Kovacs and junior Madison VanDyke. Purdue would finally break through and find its second equalizer when Kylie Hase knocked in a rebound before Ott could get back in position.
Kovacs had the Spartans' best chance at a game-winner in the 98th minute, getting on the end of a bending Stephan free kick with a header, but Bova was just able to get a hand on it and make the save. Stephan, who struggled with calf cramping on a warm, humid night, created scoring chances from midfield throughout the game.
"Cam did what she does tonight and Dani (Stephan) joined Mouse (Michaela) as an on-the-field leader both with her communication and the way she played," Saxton said. "Often times over the years when you concede late and go into overtime, the momentum stays with the opponent. I thought we took that momentum back tonight and that's a credit to us moving forward."
Up Next: The Spartans finish the two-game trip to the Hoosier State with a 1 p.m. kickoff at Indiana Sept. 16. The game will be broadcast on BTN Plus.
