MSU fell behind early, and couldn't recover against the Hoosiers.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Michigan State women's soccer closed the opening weekend of Big Ten play with a 3-0 loss to Indiana Sunday afternoon at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
Â
The Spartans fall to 5-2-2 overall and 0-1-1 in Big Ten play while the Hoosiers improve to 6-1-2 and 2-0-0 in conference with the win.
Â
How It Happened: IU put pressure on the Spartans early, opening the scoring in the ninth minute with a rebound goal from Maya Piper. After the first shot bounced off the post, MSU goalkeeper Reilley Ott couldn't get back in position to stop Piper's second-chance, making it 1-0.
Â
The Hoosiers found their second score in the 21st minute, thanks to a Melanie Forbes drive into the box and shot from 16-yards past Ott, making it 2-0.
Â
"I thought we got off to a slow start, but we didn't give up and fought hard," MSU head coach Tom Saxton said. "We just weren't good enough early. Indiana is a senior-dominated team and a very good one this year. All credit to them." Â
Â
The Spartans found their best first-half chance in the 29th minute, thanks to freshman Camryn Evans. The forward got behind the defense and chipped it over the head of IU keeper Bethany Kopel, but a Hoosier defender was able to swipe it away as the slow-roller reached the goal line.
Â
MSU had chances throughout to find the back of the net and make it a 2-1 game. Sophomore Bella Jodzis just missed wide right in the 47th minute, while redshirt-juniors Michaela Kovacs and Brittany Tanner both had second-half opportunities in the box that didn't find their way past Kopel. Â
Â
"If Cam's (shot) would have rolled across the goal, I think it could have given us the jolt we needed," Saxton said. "I felt good about the way we came out in the second-half and showed that Spartan spirit and fight." Â Â
Â
The Hoosier's third goal came in the 57th minute, on a Caroline Dreher drive from 35-yards out that curled just inside the crossbar, leaving Ott without a chance at making a save.
Â
Four of MSU's seven shots came on goal Sunday afternoon, while seven of the Hoosiers' 15 were on target.
Â
"The team is ready to bounce back, and the spirits are good," Saxton said. "We know we have to deal with the setback and move forward coming back home."
Up Next: The Spartans return to DeMartin Stadium for a two-game Big Ten set, beginning with Minnesota Thursday, Sept. 20, for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Wisconsin visits East Lansing, Sunday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m.
