Spartans Fall in Big Ten Opener

Makenzie Brown scored the lone goal for Michigan State
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Playing in its third-consecutive home match, the Michigan State field hockey team lost to No. 3-ranked Maryland in Saturday's Big Ten opener by a final score of 5-1. The Spartans have fell in each of their last four conference openers with their last win coming against Ohio State during the 2014 season.
MSU fell to 3-5 and 0-1 in the Big Ten while Maryland remained unbeaten at 8-0 overall.
The Terrapins held a 22-6 shot advantage which included a 14-4 advantage in shots on goal. Maryland took 10 penalty corners to just four for Michigan State and scored on five of them.
Freshman goalkeeper Jade Arundell made eight saves in cage for the Spartans while Maryland's Sarah Holliday made three. Arundell now holds a .716 save percentage on 123 total shots faced.
Michigan State held Maryland scoreless through the first 19 minutes of action, saving four shots on goal prior to the Terrapins first goal of the game. Maryland took a two-goal lead in the 21st minute scoring two goals less than a minute apart from one another. Sophie Giezeman and Linnea Gonzales each scored on first half corners with assists to Bodil Keus.
The Spartans were nearly able to respond in the 23rd minute following a pair of penalty corners, but senior Bailey Higgins and junior Makenzie Brown each had shots saved.
Mayv Clune extended Maryland's lead to 3-0 following an assist from Nike Lorenz in the 31st minute.
MSU hit pay-dirt right before the end of the half as Brown scored her first goal of the season off of a penalty corner from junior Kelsey Keener in the 34th minute. Brown entered the 2018 season as the Spartans leading returning scorer with three goals in 2017.
Lorenz extended the Terrapin lead in the 38th minute weaving through the Spartan defense to find an opening off of a penalty corner by Hannah Bond. Gonzales scored her second goal of the afternoon and eighth of the season off a Madison Maguire penalty corner in the 51st minute to provide Maryland with a 5-1 advantage.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Michigan State opens a three-game road trip with a trip to Mount Pleasant, Michigan for a match against Central Michigan on Tuesday, September 18 at 4:00 p.m. The Chippewas are 1-7 on the season following a loss to Longwood in the MAC opener. Central's lone victory of the season came against Saint Louis on August 26 with a 1-0 result.
