The Spartans open the season on Thursday, Sept. 20.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State women's tennis team begins its 2018 fall campaign at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. The tournament takes place at the Western Racquet Club from Thursday, Sept. 20 through Saturday, Sept. 22. The finals will take place at the Al McGuire Center at Marquette University on Sunday, Sept. 23.
"I'm excited for a new season, for a fresh start," MSU head coach Kim Bruno said. "We have five new players added to our roster, just to see what they're about in match-like scenarios at the collegiate level and just to see more of what my returners can keep adding to the team – keep pushing the needle forward."
The Spartans are coming off an impressive 16-9 season in 2017-18, including a 7-6 mark in Big Ten play.
This marked the second time in program history the team had back-to-back seasons with a winning conference record, after finishing with a 7-4 record during the 2016-17 season. The last time the Spartans had back-to-back winning Big Ten records was the 1998 and 1999 seasons.
The 2018-19 roster returns six players from last season and welcomes five new Spartans: freshmen Kate Harvey, Lauren Lemonds, Maja Pietrowicz and Nicole Stephens, and sophomore Mary Lewis.
The four freshmen combine to make the highest-ranked recruiting class in program history, coming in at No. 25 in the updated TennisRecruiting.net Women's Recruiting Class rankings, for MSU.
"I want to see how they represent wearing the Green and White, see how coachable and moldable they are," Bruno said. "So far what everyone's shown in practice has been phenomenal, so I'm just looking to see that work itself into the match-like scenario."
Michigan State will be sending four players to the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, including Lemonds, Pietrowicz, Lewis and junior Samantha Memije.
Last season, Memije went 20-5 overall in singles, with a 10-1 mark in conference play.
"It's the first tournament of the year, so I'm looking forward to being back on the court and playing matches," Memije said. "I want to get back into the groove of things and be a role model to the freshmen that are going to be with me at this tournament. Hopefully we play our best and compete hard."
In addition to the Spartans, players from schools across the country will be represented in Milwaukee this week.
Players will be competing for a spot in the main draw of the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.
The fall championships will take place from November 7-11, in Surprise, Arizona.
