
Meet the Spartans: Layne Malczewski

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State wrestling will feature a newcomer weekly throughout the preseason in order to "Meet the Spartans" leading up to the 2018-19 season.
This week, freshman Layne Malczewski (Macomb, Michigan / Dakota High School) sat down with msuspartans.com to answer some questions.
1. Why did you choose to wrestle at Michigan State?
I chose to wrestle at Michigan State because it seemed like one big family. All of the guys get along really well and everyone treats each other with respect.
2. What are you most excited about as you begin your Spartan wrestling career?
I'm very excited to start lifting and having workouts everyday so that I can continue to get bigger, faster and stronger.
3. When did you first start wrestling?
I started wrestling when I was 4 years old.
4. Favorite wrestling memory?
My favorite wrestling memory was taking 5th at super 32's last year because I was seeded around 60 coming into the tournament.
5. What's your major at Michigan State and why?
I chose to do supply chain management because it's #1 in the country here, and I want to own my own business when I am older.
6. Who has taught you the most about wrestling growing up?
There isn't really one specific person who has taught me the most about wrestling, I have had a lot of coaches throughout my 14 years of wrestling and they have all played a big factor in my growth.
7. What superhero power would you have if you could choose one?
I think I would choose super speed as my superhero power.
8. Favorite meal?
Mashed potatoes and gravy
9. Favorite TV show?
The 100
10. Favorite thing to do besides wrestling?
Hangout with my friends and play pickup games of basketball, football, baseball, etc.
Prior to MSU: Wrestled at Dakota High School under MSU alum Ed Skowneski ... Three year captain of the wrestling team ... Ranked No. 20 in the nation by InterMat high school rankings ... compiled a 169-23 record in three seasons ... three-time All-State, All-Mac and All-County selection ... member of the County Dream team ... finished fourth at State in his junior year ... came third at State in his freshman and sophomore year ... competed in the Virginia Beach National Duals, the Grappler Fall Classic, Super 32 Challenge, Cadet Freestyle and Greco National Duals.
