EAST LANSING, MICH. -- The Michigan State men's tennis team dropped their first match of the season on Friday, January 18, falling to Army West Point by a final tally of 4-2.
With a loss, the Spartans drop to 2-1 on the young season, while Army wins in their season opener to start 1-0.
Army stole the doubles point from Michigan State, winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, Alejandro Quiros and Diego Huttepain defeated senior Billy Shisler and freshman Nick Williams, 6-4. The Spartans knotted things up at 1-1 in doubles with a victory at No. 1 doubles by a 6-4 tally. Army closed things out in doubles as their No. 2 pairing defeating senior Ivan Rakic and freshman Anthony Pero, 7-6 (7-4), in a tiebreaker.
Sophomore Jack Winkler continued his unbeaten start to the dual match season, coming away victorious at No. 1 singles, (6-3, 6-2). The remaining singles matches all went to a deciding third set despite the Spartans winning four first sets. Williams was the other singles winner for Michigan State, defeating Quiros (6-1, 2-6, 6-2) to earn his first victory of the Winter season. Last week, Williams saw both of his singles matches go unfinished in showdowns against Xavier and Chicago State.
Winkler, Rakic, Williams and freshman Carson Gates all won their opening sets in singles action.
COACH ORLANDO'S THOUGHTS
"It was a hard fought match," said Michigan State head coach Gene Orlando. "We had opportunities to win the doubles point, but let it slip away. In singles we battled, winning four first sets, but struggled to close out matches. Looking to bounce back tomorrow against Yale!"
