Michigan State heads to West Point, New York on Thursday, Jan. 17.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State is back in action this weekend as they head out East to play in the Arthur Ashe Invitational at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York starting Friday, January 18. The Spartans will have three duals in three days from the Lichtenberg Tennis Center as they face-off with Yale, Army and Cal Poly on January 18-20.
"We're excited to participate in the Arthur Ashe Invitational at the United State Military Academy this weekend," said Michigan State head coach Gene Orlando. "This will be a historical and educational business trip for our program. We're looking forward to having the opportunity to experience life on the older United States Military base."
This weekend will be the season opener for Army, Yale and Cal Poly, but the Spartans will enter with two victories already under their belt following 4-2 and 4-1 wins over Xavier and Chicago State last weekend. Sophomore Jack Winkler and freshmen Carson Gates and Anthony Pero all racked up two singles wins apiece for Michigan State in their home lid-lifter.
In addition to the Spartans' three matches in three days, Michigan State will have opportunities to eat in the famed West Point mess hall and tour both the barracks and the military training simulation center. Footage from the trip will be featured in an upcoming episode of Spartans All-Access which airs Monday's at 5:30 p.m. ET on FOX Sports Detroit.
Two seasons ago, Michigan State welcomed Army and Air Force to the indoor tennis facility over President's Day weekend for a pair of dual meets. The Spartans defeated both teams by a final tally of 6-1 to close out the weekend.
"We're excited to see the United States Military Academy, that place is obviously special in what they do for our country. We have an opportunity to do some things that most student-athletes don't get the chance to do so we're really excited about it," said Orlando. "The whole weekend is going to be a great challenge for us going against three quality opponents in Army, Yale and Cal Poly, but I'm excited about it."
