EAST LANSING, Mich. -- With a standing room only crowd in attendance of 2,229, the Michigan State Spartans were defeated by No. 5-ranked Michigan, 30-10, from Jenison Field House on January 18, 2019.
"It's because we're a program on the rise and our guys are working hard," said Michigan State head coach Roger Chandler of Friday night's crowd. "People are excited about watching these guys compete, but we have to compete hard. It can't be every other match. This is a fun group of guys and there's no doubt in my mind that they're going to continue to grow. I'm excited about this group, I really am."
With a loss, Michigan State is now 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the Big Ten prior to their upcoming dual against Rutgers on January 25. The ranked Wolverines remain unbeaten at 7-0, with a 3-0 mark in conference action.
With the dual starting at 125 points, Michigan State got off on the right foot with sophomore Rayvon Foley earning a 10-2 major decision over Austin Assad. Foley was the aggressor early, earning two takedowns, an escape and a two-point near fall in the first two periods. Assad scored two on a pair of escapes, but riding time gave Foley the major as time expired.
"Assad was in on Rayvon's leg, he's bouncing around defending that shot for the first minute of the match, and nothing changed for him," said Chandler. "Rayvon stayed engaged in the match, he didn't bail on anything and that's who Rayvon is. He's going to fight you tooth and nail in every position and that's one of the things we talk about on a daily basis in preparation. Rayvon's going to give 100 percent and sometimes even more."
Newly No. 1-ranked Stevan Micic gave Michigan the lead following his bout against Anthony Tutolo at 133 pounds, pinning the Spartan in 0:41.
At 141 pounds, redshirt senior Austin Eicher earned the first takedown in his bout with No. 5-ranked Kanen Storr. A reversal and a takedown earned Storr five points in the first period, but Eicher earned two takedowns and was granted a penalty point to tie things at 5-5 heading into what turned into a scoreless second period. Storr took Eicher down three times in the third in an eventual 13-7 victory for the Wolverines.
Starting at 149 pounds, Michigan went on to rattle off three straight major decisions to take a 21-4 lead over Michigan State.
Redshirt sophomore Drew Hughes turned in a competitive effort against No. 3-ranked Myles Amine, and trailed just 3-2 to the junior following an escape to open the third period. An ensuing takedown by Amine sunk Hughes however, giving Amine a 5-3 decision heading into the 184 pound bout.
"Drew wrestled Amine last year in the finals of the Michigan State Open and it wasn't a close match, but Drew adjusted," said Chandler. "He was in that match the entire time because he fought in every single position. If Drew can do that when he steps on the mat, it doesn't matter if the guy is ranked highly or ranked 50th in the country, good things are going to happen. He wrestled all three positions tonight and you never see that out of Drew, he took down tonight and escaped. He wrestled in all three positions tonight and that's all we ask of our guys."
Breaking a three-bout losing skid, redshirt freshman Cameron Caffey got the Jenison crowd on their feet at 184 pounds, pinning a newcomer into Michigan's line-up, J.T. Correll, in 1:41.
Controversy ensued at 197 pounds as Brad Wilton earned a late takedown as time expired in the third. Michigan State's bench called for a review for potential back points, but weren't awarded the call. Michigan's Jackson Striggow earned the point for riding time to defeat Wilton, 7-6.
Heavyweight Chase Beard competed to the final buzzer with Michigan's Mason Parris, but ultimately fell to No 8-ranked wrestler by way of 6-3 decision. Beard earned the first takedown of the bout in the first period.
