MSU Downs VCU, 4-0, at ITA Kick-Off Weekend

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Michigan State women's tennis team closed out ITA Kick-Off Weekend with a 4-0 victory over VCU Sunday morning in Chapel Hill, N.C., improving to 2-2 on the season.
MSU was able to secure the doubles point with wins on courts one and three to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead going into singles play.
VCU won the first doubles match as freshmen Nicole Stephens and Lauren Lemonds fell to Paola Diaz-Delgado and Kanako Yano, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles.
Senior Emily Metcalf and freshman Maja Pietrowicz evened the race for the doubles point as the duo defeated Noumea Witmus and Melissa Ifidzhen, 6-2, on court one. The point was clinched at No. 3 doubles as senior Davina Nguyen and junior Samantha Memije defeated Marina Bakkari and Sofia Sualehe, 6-2.
In singles, the Spartans won three consecutive matches to clinch the match at 4-0. Nguyen, Metcalf and Stephens all had wins in straight sets for Michigan State.
Nguyen defeated Sualehe, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5 singles to put the Spartans ahead 2-0, while Metcalf defeated Yano, 6-3, at No. 3 singles to put MSU in position to clinch the match.
The match was clinched on court six as Stephens downed Witmus, 6-2, 6-4.
Michigan State returns to East Lansing next weekend for the home-opener on Friday, Feb. 1 as the team hosts Xavier at 1 p.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The Spartans will travel to Ann Arbor the following day to face in-state rival Michigan at 1
p.m. for the first Big Ten match of the season.
