EAST LANSING, Mich.– The Michigan State women's tennis team returns home this weekend after a four-match road trip to begin the 2019 spring season. The team will host Xavier in its home-opener Friday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. MSU then travels to Ann Arbor the following day to take on in-state rival Michigan at 1 p.m., in the first Big Ten match of the season.
This will be the third-ever meeting between the Michigan State Spartans and Xavier Musketeers, as the Spartans lead the series record 2-0. Michigan leads the all-time series 49-19.
Last season, the Spartans were successful at home, as they posted a 9-3 record in matches in East Lansing. The team also was 7-6 in conference play.
"We're excited. We've been on the road these last two weekends and it's always a little draining," MSU head coach Kim Bruno said. "We're ready to play in front of Spartan fans, and to share our talents with the people around here. I think coming off these last two tough weekends, I just want to see us continuously playing more and more complete matches throughout."
Michigan State began the 2019 season on the road with two matches in both Missoula, Mont. and Chapel Hill, N.C. The team went 2-2 during the stretch, with wins against Montana and VCU.
Last time out, the Spartans went 1-1 at ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Chapel Hill, N.C. as they fell to Princeton, 4-2, on Jan. 26, before defeating VCU, 4-0, on Jan. 27.
So far this season, the Spartans have been led by the duo of senior Emily Metcalf and freshman Maja Pietrowicz, as the pair is 3-0 at first doubles.
Freshman Nicole Stephens has three singles wins on the season, while Metcalf and junior Samantha Memije have two wins each.
The Spartans will be at home again next weekend, as they host UConn and Bowling Green on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. respectively, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
Live video will be available here for Friday's match vs. Xavier.
