
Spartans Wrap Up Play in Day Two of MSU Beeman Invite

East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team wrapped up day two of the MSU Beeman Invite with two wins, Saturday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
MSU started the day with action from freshmen Jarreau Campbell and Drew Keene in consolation singles play. Campbell took on Snezhko of Iowa, while Keene faced off against Iowa's Clegg. Campbell grabbed the first set, 6-3, before falling in the second (6-3) to force a match tiebreaker. The two battled it out before Snezhko rallied and came away with the 12-10 win. Keene fell to Clegg in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Main draw singles followed with MSU's John Carlin and Kazuki Matsuno. Carlin matched up with Michigan's Andrew Fenty, while Matsuno took on Mattias Siimar.Matsuno fell Siimar, who ranks No. 53 in ITA/Oracle Singles Rankings, 6-2, 6-1. After dropping the first set (6-1), Carlin pushed Fenty in set number two. Squared away at five in the second, No. 30-ranked Fenty rallied to take the final two games and the match.Â
Elsewhere in main draw singles action, Anthony Pero and Carson Gates took on a tandem from Iowa. Gates battled the Hawkeyes' Joe Tyler, while Pero took on Will Davies. Pero fell 6-1, 6-2 to Davies, and after leading 4-1 in the second set, Gates fell to Tyler (6-1, 6-4).Â
In consolation doubles action, Keene and Campbell took on DePaul's Tuff and Zador, rolling to a 6-2 win. Carlin and Matsuno fell to Fletchall and Vukovic of Indiana, 6-2, and Gates and Pero fell in a tough battle with Casati and Spanjaard of DePaul, 7-6(5)
Keene and Campbell resumed singles play in the afternoon session, matching up against DePaul tandem. Keene fell behind early before rallying to win the first set, 7-5. The freshman from Corpus Christi, Texas took an early 3-0 lead before falling 6-4 in the second set. Tuff took the match tiebreaker, 10-3, to claim the match.
Campbell fell to Zador of DePaul in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. John Carlin recorded his first victory of the day in singles action, knocking off Fletchall of Indiana in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Matsuno fell to Vukovic (6-3, 6-0) and Pero was defeated by DePaul's Spanjaard, 6-4, 6-3. Gates took on Casati and grabbed early momentum with a 6-3 first set win. Casati took the second 6-0 and finished in the tiebreaker, 10-5 to seal the win.Â
