MSU continues the homestand on Sunday against No. 21 Rutgers for Senior Day.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's soccer fell to Maryland, 1-0, on Thursday night at DeMartin Stadium.
MSU falls to 8-8-1 on the season, with a 1-7-1 record in conference play. Maryland improves to 9-6-3 and 5-4-1 in Big Ten action.
Michigan State is now 6-3-0 at DeMartin Stadium this season, with two matches remaining in the four-game homestand to conclude the regular season.
"I thought the play in the first two-thirds was outstanding," MSU head coach Tom Saxton said. "We had one defensive lapse and it costed us the game, but at the end of the day, you have to score goals. We had such a successful first two-thirds of play and then we got to the final third – sometimes we were rushed, sometimes missed the last pass. Then again, we had multiple corners, multiple chances, and we just couldn't put the ball past the line."
With the Spartans fighting to stay alive in the hunt for the postseason, MSU had five of the 11 starters play 90 minutes, including freshman forward Paige Webber.
With the 1-0 loss, the Spartans' last four games have been decided by just one goal. Redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Lauren Kozal, who was coming off a career-high 11 saves against No. 19-ranked Michigan last weekend, had five saves for the Spartans.
Despite the goal edge, Michigan State competed with Maryland throughout the game and led in shots, 11-8 and had multiple scoring opportunities.
Maryland got on the board in the 29th minute off a goal by Loren Sefick, becoming the game-winner for the Terrapins. Malikae Dayes had a long ball up-field, finding the head of Alyssa Poarch, which Sefick was able to ground and beat Kozal on a shot from just outside the box.
The Spartans best scoring opportunity came late in the game as the team was searching for an equalizer. Junior midfielder Danielle Stephan hit the crossbar on a free kick from 30 yards out.
"This team doesn't give up, and they won't," Saxton said. "I'm proud of the way the team has played for a majority of the year. We just have to keep our heads up and go back to work on Sunday and finish things out on Wednesday."
UP NEXT: Michigan State hosts No. 21 Rutgers on Sunday, Oct. 27 for Senior Day. The Spartans will honor the team's 12 seniors - Reilley Ott, Amy Krause, Michaela Kovacs, Kassidy Madrigal, Lydia Franks, Julia Crowe, Hannah Jones, Marta Gappy, Celia Oatis, Brittany Tanner, Sadie Misiewicz and Madison VanDyke - prior to the start of the game.
