
Spartans Conclude Day one of WMU Invite with Three Wins

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Four Michigan State men's tennis student-athletes finished up day one of the Western Michigan Invite Friday in Kalamazoo, Mich at the Sorensen Courts.
The Spartans finished with three wins on the day, highlighted by two doubles wins from the freshmen duo of Drew Keene and Jarreau Campbell. Campbell also collected a singles win for MSU.
In his second fall tournament of the season, Campbell dropped Luiz Dos Santos of University of Illinois- Chicago, 6-2, 6-1. Campbell and Keene, from Bloomfield Hills, Mich. and Corpus Christi, Texas, respectively, collected their first doubles win over Rodrigo Crespo and Arjun Honnappa of Western Michigan, 6-2. The duo followed with a 6-4 win over Matthew Halpin and Braeden Ho of Notre Dame, 6-4.
Elsewhere in singles action, sophomore Carson Gates was forced to retire trailing 2-0 in the first to Johnathan Small of Notre Dame. Keene lost a battle with Notre Dame's Paul Gota in a match tiebreaker (4-6, 7-6(4), 1-0(6)). Freshman Kazuki Matsuno too fell in a match tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (5).
In doubles, Matsuno and Gates fell to Notre Dame's Andrew Mariados and Conor Somers, 6-1, before falling to Diego Le Gal Perez and Brandon Lew of Illinois State, 6-4.
The Spartans return to action tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. in Kalamazoo.
