EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State swimming and diving competed in Iowa City, Iowa over the course of a two-day series. The Spartan men fell to the Hawkeyes, 180-112. The women fell to Iowa, 183-113, and defeated Northern Iowa, 180-102.
The Spartans came out with four first-place finishes overall.
"It's really early in the season, but I thought we did pretty well. I take my hat off to Michael Schwers, Jon Lee and Erin Szara, they all won some events which was nice," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "The men had a pretty good meet here. I thought Aidan Farley had a great meet and I thought we competed well against Iowa, they've got a pretty good team."
The men claimed three first-place finishes in their dual meet against the Hawkeyes.
Coming up with the first top-spot finish was junior Aidan Farley in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:39.00. He was followed by sophomore Jonathan Lee, with a time of 2:04.30, in the 200 breaststroke. Lastly, in the 100 butterfly was Michael Schwers, clocking a time of 48.97.
The women took home one first-place finish and six second-place finishes in their tri-meet against Iowa and Northern Iowa.
"On the diving side, Erin Neely and Amanda Ling both made their zone cuts which was pretty exciting. I thought Sophia Balow and Emma Inch did really well. We were a little off, but we will take the win against Northern Iowa," said Gianiodis.
Erin Szara captured the sole win for the Spartans in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.56. Freshman Emma Inch had two second-place finishes in the 1000 freestyle and the 200 fly, with respective times of 10:14.75 and 2:06.33.
In diving action, juniors Amanda Ling and Erin Neely both qualified for NCAA diving regionals in the 1-meter with scores of 290.45 and 267.05, respectively.
The Spartans are back in action on Oct. 12 in Cincinnati, Ohio as they take on the Bearcats of Cincinnati at 12 p.m.
