Men's Tennis Wraps up Day One of Big Ten Indoors

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's men's tennis team completed day one of the Big Ten Indoor individual championships, Friday evening at the Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln, Neb.
Five Spartans competed at the event, with Carson Gates collecting MSU's lone win on the day. Action kicked off with doubles play followed by Round of 32 single play.
The Spartan tandem of junior John Carlin and sophomore Anthony Pero fell to No.6 -seed Berdusco/Forman of Northwestern in a one set to eight match, 8-4. Sophomore Carson Gates paired up with Kazuki Matsuno, falling to No. 3-seed Okonkwo and Tyler of Iowa, 8-0.
Gates got the Spartans going in singles action, knocking off Nathan Spear of Northwestern (6-3, 6-1) to advance to the Round of 16. Pero fell to Shunya Maruyama of Nebrasksa, 6-3, 6-4 and Carlin lost in a battle with William Gleason in three sets, 6-7(1), 6-4, 6-1. Freshman Jarreau Campbell was defeated in straight sets by Steven Forman of Northwestern, 6-2, 6-1.
Matsuno fell to Scott Sulley of Wisconsin in the Round of 32, 6-1, 6-2. Gates went on to face No. 3-seed Tim Seibert of Ohio State in the Round of 16. Gates hung around early, pushing Seibert to a tiebreaker, before falling, 7-6(5). Seibert took the second set (6-3) to move on in the competition.
In consolation doubles, Pero and Carlin knocked off Moreno Lazano and Saleh of Nebraska, 6-4, while Campbell and Matsuno took down Mittleman and Wickwire, 6-4.
Consolation singles will resume tomorrow morning at the Dillon Tennis Center.
