East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State field hockey wrapped up its 2019 season Saturday afternoon at Ralph Young Field, falling 3-0 to No. 22 Ohio State.
"I think this year for us, we made a ton of progress in our non-conference schedule and our ability to perform in those games," said Head Coach Helen Knull. " I think collectively, overall, we're going to be a year older and I think when you look at our current sophomore class which last year played a lot of minutes as freshmen, they are not going to be our juniors and our seniors will have a lot of minutes and experience. Now it's about taking time in the offseason to keep improving on our basics and our decision-making on and off the ball and moving forward from there."
The Spartans were led by sophomore standout Jade Arundell with eight saves, who started in her 35th-consecutive game at goalkeeper for the Spartans.Â
Michigan State, who finished the season with a 7-11 record, racked up nine shots in the contest and the Buckeyes had 16.Â
Sophomore forward Aisha Osinga tallied three shots for MSU and junior Lia Sinisi and sophomore Isa van der Weij each added a pair of shots for the Spartans.
MSU added three penalty corners in the contest, while the Buckeyes tallied six. The Spartans had a handful of scoring chances in the second half, but Buckeye goalkeeper Aaliyah Hernandez come through with a few highlight saves to keep MSU scoreless.Â
The Buckeyes got on the board first at the 6th minute, scoring off a penalty corner from Sarah Charley, assisted by Esther Alsina Clotet. Ohio State added another goal just before halftime (23rd minute) to take a 2-0 lead into the half.Â
Ohio State capitalized on another penalty corner at the 36th minute to go up 3-0 on the Spartans. Whitney Harris striped in a straight shot with assists from Alsina Clotet and Nikki Trzaska.Â
Seniors Makenzie Brown and Kelsey Keener played in their final game as Spartans Sunday, and Knull couldn't help but give praise to all they have done for the program.Â
"There were a lot of tears in the locker room before we came out, I think it's just the finality of it that this is the last time you are going to step out and play on this field," said Knull. I think for Mak and for Keener, they are two players who have given their heart and soul into the program as honestly every student-athlete does. I'm proud of them for what they've done and the culture they've helped to set here, and they're going to be missed.Â
