Senior walk-on Noah Sargent has provided the Spartan offense with additional depth at the running back position this season. A transfer out of Saginaw Valley State, he believes he's made the best decision for himself.
After being named a first-team All-Saginaw Valley League selection at Flint Powers Catholic High School, Sargent still had dreams to play for his favorite team – Michigan State.
"I realized that I wanted to come here. I've always wanted to be here. I knew that even if I didn't play, I wanted to come here," said Sargent, who joined the team in 2017 after redshirting at SVSU.
Sargent, like many others on the Spartan football squad, grew up bleeding green and white. His parents are both Spartan alumni, which makes playing football at MSU a dream come true.
"My dad (Michael) played tight end at MSU (from 1984-87). He's always intense in the games. He takes it personally even now. My mom (Tracy) went to State too, and my sister (Niki) is on the track and field team here, so we're a true green and white family," said Sargent.
Playing at a Big Ten school allows players to go up against some of the fastest and strongest athletes in college football. Sargent is an active player on the scout team, and he takes great pride in being able to contribute to the overall success of this Spartan program in any way he can.
"I'd say the first year was intense and the first practice seeing the speed and the size of these guys. You're not really used to seeing it. I couldn't believe I was really here, and I'm really playing for Michigan State," said Sargent.
The 'What comes next?' phrase for some athletes after graduation can pose an interesting perspective. For Sargent, he's excited for the beginning of a new chapter.
Born and raised in Michigan, Sargent soon hopes to put his economics degree to use and head to a bigger city.
"I'm planning to get a job somewhere in New York, Detroit or Chicago. I'm looking at a bigger city area. I'm maybe thinking about getting an internship and have them pay for my master's program in finance and see where that takes me," said Sargent, who was an Academic All-Big Ten honoree in 2018.
Looking back on his time as a Spartan, it really has been a journey since the beginning. Sargent is eternally grateful for his degree, friendships and making his parents proud.
"Just building friendships has been really fun here. It's a dream come true really," said Sargent.
