NEW YORK – The New York Yankees welcomed Michigan State and Wake Forest for an introductory New Era Pinstripe Bowl press conference inside Yankee Stadium on Tuesday.
MSU Athletic Director Bill Beekman and head coach Mark Dantonio joined Wake Forest Athletic Director John Currie and head coach Dave Clawson, along with representatives from the Yankees and New Era, for a 30-minute live televised press conference on the YES Network.
"We have a great opponent in Wake Forest – I've already watched them on film for about a day or so," said Dantonio. "But the opportunity to come to New York City for our football team and our players, many of them have not been here; they've just heard about it. This is our 12th bowl game in 13 years, so the experiences we've had at each of these games is very, very positive.
"We're trying to create life moments a little bit for our football team. It's about growth. To have an opportunity to come to New York City and be here for four or five days, you're going to grow as a person. Every coach that I have talked to that has been to this bowl game, especially the Big Ten coaches, have said tremendous things about the experience, the way it's been run, first-class organization, all the different things that they have experienced. So we're really looking forward to it, and being on the 10th anniversary (of the Pinstripe Bowl), it makes it even a little bit more special."
"From my perspective, at Michigan State we talk about our student-athletes being great on the field of play, great in the classroom and great in life," said Beekman. "And when we think about this experience, it really touches on all of those things. New York City is just an extraordinary classroom for our young people, and the experience that the Pinstripe Bowl will allow them to have will be first rate in every respect. History lessons like the 9/11 site will extremely meaningful. Some of (the players) have never been here before, so we couldn't be more excited and thrilled to have this opportunity."
Following the press conference, the two coaches and athletic directors went onto the Yankee Stadium field for some photos and to get a glimpse of the playing surface.
Michigan State (6-6) will meet Wake Forest (8-4) in the 10th annual New Era Pinstripe Bowl on Friday, Dec. 27 at 3:20 p.m. in Yankee Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPN.
