Zackrison tallies four RBI in loss
Â
In a wild back-and-forth affair, Boston College won a 9-7 decision in extra innings over Michigan State to open the 2019 ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Â
Â
The game was a rough one in all phases for the Spartans – MSU allowed 17 base hits and committed seven errors, managing seven runs on just six base hits while earning 10 walks on the day. MSU allowed nine runs, but only two were earned runs by the Spartan pitching staff. None of MSU's seven runs were earned runs charged to the Eagles.Â
Â
Junior pitcher Jordan Watson (1-1) took the loss. She started the game but was replaced in the first inning before returning to the circle in the sixth inning. She finished out the game, scattering six base hits, allowing two walks and striking out one.Â
Â
For MSU, Kelly Zackrison had a four-RBI day, smacking a bases-clearing double in the fifth and adding a sac fly. Katie Quinlan walked twice and went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Â
Leadoff hitter Lexi DiEmmanuele and DH/3B Emme Martinez both went 5-for-6 for Boston College (1-5).  Martinez had three RBI. Relief pitcher Camryn Dolby picked up the win after 4.2 innings, allowing just two hits but walking six.

•  Katie Quinlan went 2-for-4 with a pair of walks.
Â
STATS AND STORYLINESÂ
•  An error put a run on the board for the Eagles in the top of the first inning. Lexi DiEmmanuele led off with a single, stole second, went to third on a sac bunt by Jenna Ergle, and came home as a pickoff throw got past the middle infield. MSU made a pitching change, bringing on Alli Walker. A fielder's choice scored Ergle, but Walker got out of the inning without further damage.Â
Â
•  The Spartans loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fourth, setting the table for a bases-clearing double by senior Kelly Zackrison. It was the first lead of the day for MSU.Â
Â
•  BC knotted up the game in the top of the fifth to make it a 3-3 ballgame. With the bases loaded, a throw home missed its mark, but the trailing runner tried to sneak in ahead of a tag, but Charla Ecchols nabbed her at the plate.Â
Â
•  The Spartans countered with a four-run fifth inning, getting a double from Charla Echols, three walks, and a pair of Boston College miscues, and a sac fly into the left-field corner from Zackrison.
Â
•  BC countered immediately in the top of the sixth, ripping off two doubles and two singles to pull within a run at 7-6. The Spartans had replaced Walker with sophomore McKenna Gregory in the circle, and MSU made another pitching change, going back to starter Jordan Watson. A sac fly to center by Kristin Giery scored the tying run, but Watson got MSU out of the jam with a fly ball to left corralled by Ebonee Echols.Â
Â
•  MSU opened the bottom of the sixth with a walk by Melanie Baccay, followed by Katie Quinlan legging out an infield single. A fly ball to center moved Baccay to third for runners at the corners and Quinlan stole second, but Baccay got tagged out trying to steal home for the third out of the inning. Â
Â
•  In the top of the eighth, the Eagles managed to get a pair of runners on, but Watson was poised and got the Spartans out of the inning. In the top of the ninth, she sent down BC in order.Â
Â
•  Camryn Dolby, who entered in the fourth inning, walked both Charla Echols and Kaitlyn Eveland in the top of the ninth, but retired the next two on a foul out and a strikeout. Dolby walked Ebonee Echols but got out of the inning unscathed.Â
Â
•  Jenna Ergle led off the top of the 10th with a double off the wall in left center, moved to third on a sac bunt, and came home on a single through the left side by Carlie Sanders. A double to center by Emme Martinez scored a second run, and put MSU in a 9-7 hole to enter the bottom of the frame.   MSU couldn't get anything going in the 10th and the Eagles held on for the win. Â
