MSU Drops Second One-Run Contest to BC

Echols Picks Up 24th Career Triple
 Michigan State's sixth-inning rally fell just short against Boston College, falling in a one-run contest to the Eagles (7-6) for the second straight day. MSU fell to 0-3 in this weekend's ACC/Big Ten Challenge and 3-5 overall. Boston College is 2-5.Â

The Eagles scattered 11 hits in the contest, and posted a four-run fourth inning to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 6-3 lead, and then got a solo homer from Jenna Ergle in the fifth that helped them secure the one-run victory. MSU plated three runs in the sixth, but stranded two runners in the inning after leaving the bases loaded in the fourth. In all, MSU stranded nine batters in the game.Â

Katie Quinlan and Melanie Baccay each doubled in the game, while senior Ebonee Echols had her 24th career triple in the second inning.Â

MaKenna Gregory (0-1) took the loss in the circle, giving up the solo homer to Ergle in the fifth inning. Leah Shipp started and went 3.1 innings, surrendering four runs (two earned). Jordan Watson came on in relief and gave up three base hits and two runs. For BC, Camryn Dolby earned the win, going 4.0 innins and scattering five hits, striking out six. Susannah Anderson tossed three one-hit innings for the save.Â

STATS AND STORYLINESÂ
•  BC started off the game with three straight singles, plating a run and leaving runners at the corners for cleanup hitter Gianna Boccagno. Boccagno launched a sac fly into left to plate Ellie Mataya from third for a 2-0 lead, and Shipp struck out Jenna Ergle for the second out of the inning.Â
•  Katie Quinlan led off the second with a double to the gap in left center. Ebonee Echols followed with a triple to dead center, and came home on a throwing error to tie the game at 2-2.Â
•  MSU's momentum carried on. The Spartans loaded the bases in the third but couldn't get a runner home, and then led off the fourth with a double from Melanie Baccay, and then Dolby issued back-to-back walks to load the bases for Caitie Ladd, who's sac fly into right scored Baccay.Â
•  The Eagles led off the bottom of the fourth with a single, and a fielder's choice and a walk put runners at first and second for Carly Severini. MSU went to Jordan Watson in the circle,  A misplay on her ball into center allowed her to reach on an error and score the runner from second;. a strikeout later, senior  Lexi DiEmmanuele legged out an infield single to score the runner from third for a 4-3 lead. Mataya singled up the middle to plate two more to push the BC lead to 6-4. McKenna Gregory came on in MSU's second pitching change of the inning, and got a ground ball to move the teams on to the fifth.Â
•  Ergle hit a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning to push BC's lead to 7-3.
•  The Spartans threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with a pair of hit batters and a fielder's choice. Kaitlyn Eveland legged out an infield single to bring home pinch runner Abby Joseph; pitcher Susannah Anderson then walked Joanna Bartz to plate another run and pull the Spartans within two at 7-5. A sac fly by Katie Quinlan was the first out of the inning, while plating Charla Echols, and third baseman Emme Martinez flashed the leather to snare a line ball and double Quinlan off first.Â
