Spartan Women’s Tennis Splits Doubleheader in South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Michigan State women's tennis team defeated Wright State 7-0, bouncing back after a 4-0 loss to Notre Dame earlier in the day Saturday at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
Notre Dame was able to secure the doubles point and the first three singles matches to clinch the match at 4-0.
Senior Davina Nguyen and freshman Lauren Lemonds fell to Zoe Taylor and Ally Bojczuk, 6-3, on court three.
The doubles point was clinched on court two as junior Samantha Memije and Nicole Stephens battled with Zoe Spence and Brooke Broda, but eventually fell 6-4.
In singles, the Fighting Irish claimed victories on courts two, three and five to clinch the match.
Bess Waldram defeated freshman Maja Pietrowicz at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-3. Stephens lost to Broda, 6-3, 6-2, on court five.
The match was clinched at No. 2 singles, as Lemonds dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Bojczuk.
Later that day, Michigan State was able to bounce back and sweep Wright State, 7-0.
The Spartans started the match by winning the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Memije and Stephens put the Spartans in the running for the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Luisa Pelayo and Grace Whitney on court two.
Pietrowicz and Metcalf clinched the doubles point at No. 1 doubles with a 6-4 victory over Madison Riley and Haily Morgan.
The Spartans momentum carried over to singles play as the team was able to sweep all six matches to win the match 7-0.
Nguyen kicked things off for the Spartans with a straight-set 6-1, 6-0 win over Whitney on court six. Metcalf followed suit with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Riley at No. 4 singles.
The match was clinched on court five as Stephens downed Jillian Milano, 6-3, 6-1.
Memije also downed Morgan, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. Pietrowicz battled from behind to defeat Andrea Craciun, 1-6, 6-4, 10-7, at No. 3 singles. Lemonds closed the match with a 6-2, 1-6, 10-6 win over Pelayo on court two.
The Spartans return home next weekend as they host Marquette University Friday, Feb. 22 at 5 p.m. and Dartmouth College Sunday, Feb. 24 at 10 a.m. Both matches will take place at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
