Spartans Down Marquette, 6-1

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team defeated Marquette, 6-1, on Friday evening at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The team is now 7-4 on the season and an undefeated 4-0 at home.
"The girls definitely fought hard. It was a solid performance; we played solid, basic tennis and got it done," MSU head coach Kim Bruno said. "Some positions that may have been struggling before; we stepped up in. It will be good to recover and be ready for our next match. This was a good performance by our squad. I'm proud of them."
MSU started off the match by securing the doubles point with victories on courts one and three. Senior Davina Nguyen and freshman Lauren Lemonds put the Spartans in the lead for the doubles point with a dominant 6-1 victory over Milica Novakovic and Isabella Franks, on court two.
The doubles point was clinched at No. 1 doubles as senior Emily Metcalf and freshman Maja Pietrowicz secured their eighth win of the season, as they defeated Natalija Popovic and Fleur Eggink, 6-2. The duo is now 8-1 at the No. 1 spot this spring.
After taking a 1-0 lead after doubles, the Spartans looked to continue their momentum on the singles courts. Lemonds kicked things off in singles for the Spartans as she defeated Popovic in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-1, on court two. Nguyen followed suit on court six with another straight-set victory, 6-0, 6-2, over Lesley Foe.
The match was clinched at No. 1 singles as junior Samantha Memije battled back from a 3-0 deficit in the first set to a 6-3, 6-2, victory over Eggink. This was Memije's fourth-straight win and second straight at first singles. With the match clinched at 4-0, the Spartans rallied to add three more singles wins to end the match.
Pietrowicz downed Alexandrina Chinikov, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 singles. Stephens bounced back after falling in the first set, to a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8), win over Franks on court five.Metcalf battled with Novakovic but fell in a third-set tiebreaker 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5) on court three.
The Spartans close out the weekend as they host Dartmouth at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24 at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
