EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team defeated DePaul, 4-0, on Friday evening in the team's last non-conference home matchup this season at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The Spartans improved to 9-4 on the season and an undefeated 6-0 at home.
"DePaul is a good team, they're crafty; They do some things that some other teams don't," MSU head coach Kim Bruno said. "In some positions we had to hang and we did, other positions where we needed to step up, we did. Feeling good heading into a great opportunity for us to train outdoors on spring break. We have to be happy with how we're doing at home and see where we're at when we come home from this trip."
The Blue Demons were playing with five players, causing No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles to be forfeits.
The Spartans needed one doubles win to clinch the doubles point, with senior Emily Metcalf and freshman Maja Pietrowicz securing a 6-1 victory over Lenka Antonijevic and Aspasia Avgeri at No. 1 doubles.
Junior Samantha Memije and freshman Nicole Stephens fell to Milica Tesic and Marija Jovicic, 6-0, on court two.
In singles, the Spartans secured two quick matches to clinch the match at 4-0.
Senior Davina Nguyen defeated Maddie Yergler in straight-sets at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-1.
Metcalf then downed Tesic, 6-3, 6-1, in straight-sets on court four to clinch the match.
The Spartans head to Las Vegas, Nevada, next week for their spring break trip, with matches against host UNLV and the University of San Diego. The team will play UNLV on Friday, March 8, with the match set to begin at 1 p.m. ET. MSU will close out the trip with a match versus San Diego on Sunday, March 10, at 4:30 p.m. ET.
