Women's Tennis Drops Match Against San Diego, 6-1

LAS VEGAS - The Michigan State women's tennis team fell to the University of San Diego, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Spartans are now 9-6 on the season.
San Diego secured the doubles point with wins on courts one and three.
Senior Davina Nguyen and freshman Lauren Lemonds put the Spartans in the running for the doubles point with a 6-2 victory over Daniela Morales and Maria Tyrina, but San Diego's Solymar Colling and Maria-Paula Torres responded with a 6-2 win over freshman Nicole Stephens and junior Samantha Memije at No. 1 doubles.
The doubles point was clinched on court three as freshman Maja Pietrowicz and sophomore Caroline Szabo fell to Gemma Garcia and Kati Kukaras, 6-3.
Lemonds tied the match at 1-1 as she secured the Spartans' only point in the match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Morales at No. 2 singles.
The Toreros responded with five-straight singles victories to close out the match.
Memije fell to Colling, 6-4, 6-3, on court one. Pietrowicz dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Kukaras on court four.
The match was clinched at No. 3 singles as Garcia defeated Nguyen, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
Szabo battled to three sets with Tyrina, but fell 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
The Spartans return home next weekend to begin Big Ten play with matches against Iowa and Nebraska. MSU will take on Iowa in the home conference opener on Saturday, March 16, at 12 p.m and The Spartans close out the weekend hosting Nebraska on Sunday, March 17, at 12 p.m.
