Spartans Defeat Hawkeyes in Big Ten Home Opener, 4-3

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team defeated Iowa in a hard-fought battle, 4-3, in the team's Big Ten home opener on Saturday afternoon at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The Spartans snapped a two-game losing skid and improve to 10-6 on the season, including a 1-1 mark in Big Ten play.
"Hard fought battle by our Spartan women today," MSU head coach Kim Bruno said. "Iowa was tough to beat and we just hung in and handled ourselves. What a great team win. So proud."
MSU secured the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Senior Davina Nguyen and freshman Lauren Lemonds put the Spartans in the running for the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over Michelle Bacalla and Danielle Bauers at No. 3 doubles.
The doubles point was clinched on court one as senior Emily Metcalf and freshman Maja Pietrowicz defeated Elise van Heuvelen and Samantha Mannix, 7-6 (7-4).
With Michigan State holding a 1-0 lead at the start of singles play, the Hawkeyes then won the first two singles matches.
Lemonds fell to Mannix, 6-4, 6-1, on court two and junior Samantha Memije dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to van Heuvelen at No. 1 singles.
Pietrowicz got the Spartans back back in the win column with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 victory over Ashleigh Jacobs at No. 4 singles. Stephens gave MSU a 3-2 lead as she battled to a third-set with Adorabol Huckleby and won 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 on court six.
The match was clinched on court three as Nguyen downed Sophie Clark in three sets, 1-6, 7-5, 7-5.
Bacalla defeated Metcalf, 7-5, 1-6, 6-2, at No. 5 singles, to bring the match score to 4-3.
The Spartans will take on Nebraska tomorrow, Sunday, March 17, at 12 p.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
