EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Seedings and brackets for the 2019 NCAA Wrestling Championships were announced by the NCAA on Wednesday evening. For the first time in the events history, all 33 wrestlers at each weight class were seeded into the tournament.
Michigan State will have three competitors heading to Pittsburgh for the event in sophomore 125 pounder Rayvon Foley, redshirt sophomore 174 pounder Drew Hughes, and redshirt freshman 184 pounder Cameron Caffey. Foley and Hughes earned their spots in the tournament thanks to their placings at the Big Ten Wrestling Championships while Caffey received an at-large bid.
Foley will start his journey at the NCAA Championships as the No. 9-seed facing off against No. 24-seeded Carman Ferrante of Penn. A true freshman, Ferrante is currently 24-8 with just two of his losses coming to opponents that didn't qualify for the NCAA Championships. Foley and Ferrante met previously this season at the MSU Open where Foley was a winner by major decision, 16-7.
A testament to the strength of schedule he wrestled, Foley is 10-4 this season against NCAA qualifiers with losses coming to No. 1 seed Sebastian Rivera, No. 2 seed Nick Piccininni, and No. 13 seed Drew Hildebrandt. Foley has wins over Drew Mattin, Ferrante, Michael McGee, Hildebrandt, Travis Piotrowski, Malik Heinselman, Cole Verner, Devin Schroeder, Bryce West, and Willy Girard.
As the No. 26-seed, Hughes draws No. 7-seeded Jacobe Smith of Oklahoma State. Smith is 27-3 this season and took eighth place at last years NCAA Championships to earn all-american status. This is the second time Hughes has qualified for the NCAA Championships after qualifying at 165 pounds in 2017.
After earning an at-large bid into the championships, Caffey was seeded No. 19 and will wrestle No. 14-seeded Dylan Wisman of Missouri in round one. Caffey and Wisman have met once prior at the 2018 Purple Raider Open where Wisman was a 6-4 winner. Wisman is 16-7 this season and received an automatic bid into the tournament with a first place finish at the MAC Championships. Caffey is making his debut at the NCAA Wrestling Championships.
The 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships take place at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh March 21-23.Â
