Spartans Complete Weekend Sweep with 4-3 Win Over Nebraska

EAST LANSING, Mich - The Michigan State women's tennis team defeated Nebraska, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The team improves to 11-6 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. MSU also defeated Iowa in B1G action on Saturday also by a 4-3 margin.
"Another tough team performance today," MSU head coach Kim Bruno said. "Battling is what it's all about and our women did that all weekend. Well deserved win today."
The Spartans started off the match by securing the doubles point with wins on courts one and three, as both duos earned their second victories of the weekend.
Senior Davina Nguyen and freshman Lauren Lemonds put the Spartans in the running for the doubles point with a 6-2 victory over Jeannie Lozowski and Hayley Haakenstad at No. 3 doubles. The doubles point was clinched at No.1 doubles, with senior Emily Metcalf and freshman Maja Pietrowicz defeating Vasanti Shinde and Marina Cozac, 6-3.
The Spartans' momentum carried over to singles play as the team won the first two singles matches.
Pietrowicz kicked things off in singles with a straight-set 7-5, 6-0 victory over Cozac on court four. Lemonds also notched a 6-3, 7-6 win at No. 2 singles over Claire Reifeis to push Michigan State's lead to 3-0.
The Cornhuskers got on the board as Nguyen fell to Jeannie Lozowski, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 on court three.
The match was clinched at No. 1 singles as junior Samantha Memije fought back after dropping the first set to secure a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Shinde.
Nebraska closed the match with two wins to bring the match score to 4-3. Stephens dropped a 1-6, 7-6, 7-5 decision against Haakenstad at No. 6 singles. Metcalf fell to Jessica Aragon, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 on court five.
The Spartans continue Big ten play next weekend as they host Wisconsin on Friday, March 22, at 12 p.m. before traveling to Indiana on Sunday, March 24, with the match set to begin at 5 p.m.
