The Spartans scored first, plating runs in the second and third innings before Southern Miss took the lead for good with a three-run fourth inning. Single runs in the fifth and seventh padded the lead for the Golden Eagles.
Â
Alli Walker got her second start of the day and third of the weekend in the circle and went 3.0 innings, striking out five before being relieved in the top of the fourth with two out and none on. McKenna Gregory came on in relief, and threw four innings – she scattered six hits and surrendered three runs, two of which were earned. Bailie Springfield got the win in the circle by scattering five hits over four innings, and Kaylan Ladner earned the save with three innings of one-hit relief.Â
Â
Katie Quinlan had a pair of MSU's six base hits, with three of the others going for doubles for Ebonee Echols, Charla Echols, and Laney Joyner. Sarah VanSchaik had three base hits on the day for Southern Miss, and had one RBI.Â

Â
  QUOTABLEÂ
"Lots of good today, but absolutely some things that we talked about too that we're going to continue to work on to get better. Overall, I think over this first four games of our spring break  we have really started to find ourselves and the players got to see what we see – what they are capable of and what we think they are able to accomplish. Hopefully the weather allows us to get Sunday's game in against Alabama and we have an opportunity to continue to show the growth we've made." Â
Â
 TOP PERFORMERSÂ
•  Katie Quinlan went 2-for-3 with a single.
•  Charla Echols, Laney Joyner, and Ebnoee Echols each had a double; Joyner's went for an RBI as well.

•  Kaitlyn Eveland led off the bottom of the second with a base hit up the left field line, and came around to score on a double by Laney Joyner.Â
•  Charla Echols doubled to left center with one out in the bottom of the third, and was brought home by her older sister Ebonee with another two-bagger that made it a 2-0 lead for the Spartans.Â
Â
•  A walk and a base hit put two on for the Golden Eagles in the top of the fourth, and the Spartans went to the bullpen. McKenna Gregory made her third appearance in as many games of the weekend, and was called for an illegal pitch with a full count to load the bases. Heather Hill stepped and singled to left center, bringing home two runs and leaving two in scoring position as Hill went to second on the throw. Kaitlyn Passeau then reached on a fielder's choice, as Joyner threw home and nabbed the runner coming from third. Madison Rayner followed with a single up the middle on the first pitch she saw to score a third run and give Southern Miss their go-ahead run.
