EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Michigan State Rowing team is set to start its season at a double-dual in Belleville, Michigan this weekend (March 29-30) where they will face No. 5-ranked Yale on Friday and No. 19-ranked Harvard-Radcliffe on Saturday. Initially scheduled to be a Saturday only event, the regatta was adjusted to be a two-day event due to weather related concerns at Belleville Lake. In addition to the Spartans, Big Ten rivals in No. 1-ranked Michigan and No. 17-ranked Indiana will also be in attendance.
Â
Michigan State will have two varsity eight boats, three varsity four boats, and two novice eight boats in action this weekend.
"Part of it for me is I ask our crews to start fresh on opening day and see what we can do," said Michigan State head coach Matt Weise. "Be aggressive, be overly aggressive, because I'd rather you do that so I know what we're working with. If you're tentative then we can't tell what we're working with. There's always that fearless first step to see how fast they are and find out if that matches up with the competition. We know it won't match up if they're tentative so they have to take that first step which is really what I look for."
This is the second straight season that the Spartans have faced off against the pair of Ivy League powerhouses at the Big Ten/Ivy League double-dual.
"Every third year we go to Princeton and Brown, and we trade off with Michigan and Ohio State," said Weise. "I think it was Will Porter from Yale who said 'I kind of like that, is there a way for us to have a Big Ten/Ivy with the two schools that aren't going to Princeton and Brown?'Â so last year we went to New Jersey and raced there and this year they're coming here. I think it's a really nice way to start off."
Spartans Receiving Votes in 2019 USRowing/CRCA Poll
Michigan State received three votes in each the week one and week two USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Poll's that were released over the course of the last two weeks. The Spartans were previously receiving 10 votes in the pre-season poll announced in February. Last season, Michigan State was ranked as high as No. 15 in the same poll.
