ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan State baseball lost Saturday's game at Michigan in game two of the three-game home-away-home series in the away part of the stretch at Michigan's Wilpon Complex.
The Wolverines had big innings with four runs in the third, five in the fifth and three in the eighth to win, 16-2, claiming the series after taking Friday's game in Ann Arbor. MSU and UM will wrap up the weekend series Sunday back in East Lansing at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field, scheduled for 4 p.m. and will be nationally televised on Big Ten Network.
Sophomore catcher Adam Proctor was 1-for-2 with an RBI in the fourth inning. Junior infielder Justin Antoncic, senior infielder Marty Bechina, freshman outfielder Casey Mayes and redshirt-freshman catcher Scott Combs collected hits for MSU. Senior infielder Royce Ando and freshman designated hitter Reese Trahey scored runs.
"We didn't play well today, really in any phase of the game; I don't think we pitched well, we didn't defend well and we didn't swing the bat well, so when that happens it usually doesn't end well," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "We'll go back and look at the box score and watch the video. A couple guys hit the ball hard early, I think we put together some good at bats early in the ballgame against their starter, so there's some positives there, but I think we can learn an awful lot from what we did well, but also from what we need to do better. We'll go back and take a look at that and we'll need to be better for tomorrow."
Michigan got on the board first with a solo home run to left center by Jordan Brewer for a 1-0 lead after the first frame. The Wolverines doubled their lead with another solo shot in the second off the bat of Jimmy Kerr. UM plated four runs in the third, with the big blow coming on a two-run shot by Kerr, his second round-tripper of the day and giving Michigan a 6-0 lead.
The Spartans plated a pair in the fourth inning as Ando scored on a wild pitch and Proctor later drove in Trahey with a single to left to pull MSU within 6-2.
Michigan batted around in the fifth frame, scoring five runs on five hits, with three of them being doubles, and chasing starting pitcher Mitchell Tyranski, and bringing in freshman reliever Colton Panaranto, who got a strikeout and foul out to get out of the jam, with UM leading 11-2. The Wolverines tacked on two more in the sixth for a 13-2 advantage.
MSU threatened in the seventh by loading the bases on an error and a pair of two-out walks, but a fielder's choice ended the inning to thwart the threat.
UM tacked on three more runs in the eighth for the final score of 16-2.
The Spartans and Wolverines wrap up their three-game home-away-home series on Sunday, March 31, back in East Lansing at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field, scheduled for a 4 p.m. start. Sunday's series finale will be nationally televised on Big Ten Network.
