
Women’s Tennis Defeats Penn State, 4-2, on Senior Day

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team defeated Penn State, 4-2, on Senior Day, on Sunday afternoon at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The team improves to 12-9 on the season, including a 3-4 mark in conference play.
Michigan State dropped the doubles point to begin the match, but bounced back during singles to complete the victory on Senior Day.
"When the going gets tough, we got going today; That's what matters the most," MSU head coach Kim Bruno said. "We came out tough and ready to go. When we can do that, we can beat a lot of teams; The girls proved that today. Penn State is a tough team, they're doing well in conference, they're having a good season - This was no easy task for us. I'm proud of them. It has to feel good for our seniors too."
Junior Samantha Memije and freshman Nicole Stephens put the Spartans in the running for the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over Samantha Smith and Olivia Ryan at No. 2 doubles.
The Nittany Lions evened the race for the doubles point on court three as senior Davina Nguyen and freshman Lauren Lemonds fell to Frederikke Svarre and Chelsea Sawyer, 7-5. Penn State clinched the doubles point at No. 1 doubles as senior Emily Metcalf and freshman Maja Pietrowicz dropped a 7-6 (7-5) decision to Gabby O'Gorman and Olivia Rohrbacher.
In singles play, Memije fell to O'Gorman, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles which increased Penn State's lead to 2-0.
The Spartans responded after being down 2-0 by winning the next four singles matches to clinch the match. Lemonds defeated Rohrbacher in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Pietrowicz downed Svarre in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-4 on court four to tie the match at 2 all.
Metcalf followed suit with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Ryan at No. 6 singles to put the Spartans in the lead for the first time during the match.
The match was clinched for the Spartans on court four as Stephens defeated Smith, 6-4, 6-2.
The Spartans will take to the road for the next four matches to conclude the regular season. MSU will travel to Illinois for two matches next weekend, including a match up with the Fighting Illini on Saturday, April 6 and a visit to Northwestern on Sunday, April 7.
