EAST LANSING -- Taro Hirose has been named to the American Hockey Coaches Association/CCM All-America First Team, the organization announced on Friday (April 12). Hirose was one of 25 players named to the AHCA/CCM All-America Teams, which are selected by members of the AHCA.
Â
Hirose led the country for much of the season in both points and assists. He took the national lead in points on Jan. 4 and finished the season with a total of 50, which still is tied for the most by any player in the country. He ended his season with 35 assists, which ranks second nationally.
Â
The native of Calgary, Alberta, was the most honored player in the conference as he was voted the Big Ten Player of the Year and was the only unanimous All-Big Ten selection, earning first-team accolades. In leading the Big Ten in points with 34 (10g, 24), Hirose became the first Spartan to win the conference scoring title. He had 10 multi-point games in Big Ten play, including three points in wins over Michigan (0-3--3; Nov. 30), Wisconsin (1-2--3; Feb. 1) and twice vs. Minnesota (1-2--3; Nov. 24 and 0-3--3; Jan. 19).
Â
Hirose produced a total of 15 multi-point games, in which the Spartans went 10-4-1, and had three points on nine different occasions. He garnered four Big Ten weekly awards and was named the NCAA First Star of the Week on Oct. 30 after his two three-point games helped the Spartans' sweep No. 8 Cornell on the road.
Â
The Hobey Baker Award finalist signed an entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings on March 12, ending his collegiate career with 116 points (33g, 83a) in 106 games. His 50 points this past season were the most by a Spartan since 2002-03 (John-Michael Liles, 50) while his 35 assists were also the most since '02-03 (Brad Fast, 35).
Â
Hirose is the 48th individual player in MSU program history to be named an All-American. In total, Michigan State has had 56 All-America selections. Prior to Hirose, the last Spartan to earn AHCA/CCM All-America honors was Jake Hildebrand in 2015 (first team).
