Women’s Tennis Defeats Maryland, 4-0

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Michigan State women's tennis team defeated Maryland, 4-0, on Friday afternoon at the Junior Tennis Champions Center. The team improved to 14-10 on the season and 5-5 in Big Ten play.
The Spartans clinched the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Junior Samantha Memije and freshman Nicole Stephens put the Spartans in the running for the doubles point with a 6-4 victory over Arnelle Sullivan and Anastasiia Gevel at No. 2 doubles.
Maryland evened the race as senior Davina Nguyen and freshman Lauren Lemonds dropped a 6-4 decision to Saya Usui and Kate Yemelyanenka on court three.
The doubles point was clinched at No. 1 doubles, with senior Emily Metcalf and freshman Maja Pietrowicz defeating Eva Alexandrova and Millie Stretton, 7-5.
With Michigan State taking a 1-0 lead after doubles, the team won the first three singles matches in straight-sets to clinch the match at 4-0.
Nguyen posted a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory over Gevel at No. 3 singles. Pietrowicz followed suit as she defeated Sullivan, 6-2, 6-2, on court four.
The match was clinched at No. 6 singles when Metcalf defeated Usui, 7-5, 6-1.
The Spartans conclude the regular season on Sunday, April 14, as the team takes on Rutgers at 11 a.m.
