Spartans Down Rutgers, 5-2, to Conclude The Regular Season

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Michigan State women's tennis team defeated Rutgers, 5-2, in the last match of the regular season on Sunday afternoon at the Rutgers Tennis Complex.
With the team's third-straight conference win, the Spartans improved to 15-10 on the season and 6-5 in Big Ten play. In the past three seasons under head coach Kim Bruno, the Spartans have achieved their third-straight season with a winning Big Ten record. This marks the first time in Spartan women's tennis program history in which the team has had three-straight winning Big Ten seasons.
The Spartans secured the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Senior Davina Nguyen and freshman Lauren Lemonds defeated Sydney Kaplan and Tess Fisher, 6-2, at No. 3 doubles to put the team in the running for the doubles point.
With the win, Nguyen became the winningest doubles player in Spartan women's tennis history with 68 career doubles wins.
The doubles point was clinched on court one, when senior Emily Metcalf and freshman Maja Pietrowicz downed Kat Muzik and Maya Jacobs, 6-2.
With a 1-0 lead after doubles play, the Spartans' momentum carried over to the singles courts as the team won the next three singles matches to clinch the match.
Freshman Nicole Stephens kicked things off for the Spartans with a straight-set, 6-1, 6-1, victory over Jaci Cochrane at No. 5 singles. Junior Samantha Memije followed suit with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jacobs at first singles.
The match was clinched on court six, with Metcalf defeating Isabelle Da Silva, 7-6, 7-5. Metcalf also clinched the Spartans' 4-0 victory over Maryland on Friday, April 12.
Nguyen dropped a 4-6, 6-0, 4-6 decision to Muzik at No. 3 singles.
Pietrowicz battled to a three-set victory over Kaplan on court four, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, after dropping the first set.
Lemonds dropped a three-set decision to Fisher, 6-2, 5-7, 4-6, at No. 2 singles to close the match.
After a bye week, the Spartans will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska for the 2019 Women's Tennis Big Ten Tournament from Thursday, April 25 to Sunday, April 28. The tournament will be hosted by the University of Nebraska. The top 10 in the Big Ten standings will earn a spot in the tournament, with the Spartans currently sitting in seventh. The final tournament seedlings will be determined upon the conclusion of the regular season on Sunday, April 21.
