The team claims the Athletic Director's Award for a record-setting 13th time.
Bailey Higgins of the field hockey team was named the winner of the Gwendolyn Norrell Community Service & Leadership Award. The award is presented to the student-athlete who has demonstrated the highest level of commitment to impacting the areas of leadership and community service.

Over the course of her career, Higgins has been a true humanitarian and a leader at Michigan State University by impacting communities in East Lansing and beyond. He has demonstrated a high level of engagement on issues that impact all student-athletes by helping plan events involving various student-athlete leadership groups, campus government and registered student organizations. A member of the DLC Leadership Team, Shisler's planning and executing the MSU Athletics Freshman Kickoff, an annual diversity and leadership event for 200 freshman student-athletes, is one of his most notable contributions. His involvement has been central to improving the student-athlete experience and has promoted student-athlete engagement within the greater campus community. Upon graduation, Shisler will begin his professional career with Abbot Nutrition.
Lea Mitchell (gymnastics, journalism major) and Xavier Tillman (men's basketball, communication) were presented with the Harold & Raynor Shnider Office of the Provost Awards. The honor is given to a freshman or sophomore student-athlete who embodies the characteristics promoted by Student-Athlete Support Services, with emphasis on academic performance, community involvement and leadership ability.

Mitchell fully embodies what it means to be a student-athlete at Michigan State University. Mitchell is a two-time NACG/W Scholar All-American and three-time Dean's List recipient who carries a 3.922 cumulative GPA in Journalism. Her accomplishments have carried over to the gym as well where she is a two-time varsity letterwinner and was named the 2018 Most Valuable Player and Newcomer of the Year. She has participated in numerous events including Spartan Buddies, Special Olympics, Operation Christmas Child, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, and Race for the Place.

It has not taken long for Tillman to become an impactful student-athlete at Michigan State University. His dedication to excellence in the classroom, giving back to the community, and work ethic on the basketball court has made him a standout. This rising leader carries a cumulative GPA of 3.616 and is the recipient of Academic All-Big Ten and Dean's List honors. He is an active participant in numerous initiatives with the Putting Athletes and Community Together (PACT) Program including Accessible Trick or Treating, Appletree Daycare Reading, and visiting patients at the Grand Rapids Children's Hospital. His positive impact in the classroom and community has also transferred to the court as he was named the 2018 and 2019 Most Improved Player and awarded the 2019 Sixth Man Player of the Year Award by the Big Ten Conference.
The 2019 Steve Smith Philanthropy Award was presented to Rick and Suzanne Lasch for their continued support and generosity toward the Michigan State Athletics Department.
A long-standing tradition and highlight of the gala is the musical entertainment provided by MSU's own student-athletes, highlighting the talents that stretch beyond competition and the classroom. This year, men's soccer goalkeeper Zach Kovan performed at the gala for the second time, playing acoustic guitar for the crowd. Kovan also sang the national anthem at the Final Four in Minneapolis, along with other student-athletes from Auburn, Texas Tech and Virginia.

Kovan's talents go well beyond the soccer field. The four-time varsity letterwinner has been on the Dean's List four times and is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. He has shown his strong commitment to the community during his time at Michigan State University as well. He has participated in the Students Today Leaders Forever Alternative Spring Break, the Student-Athlete Food Drive and the Capital Area Down Syndrome Association Soccer Clinic. In addition to balancing his academic and athletic career, Kovan is passionate for music (vocal, guitar, piano, ukulele, banjo and cello) and has participated in multiple performances in high school and beyond. Upon graduation, he will begin his career at Nike headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon.
The keynote address was given by Kellie Dean, who has made a profound impact in the Greater Lansing community through his passion for helping others. His journey began at Michigan State University in 1971 when he received a football scholarship, and he went on to graduate with his undergraduate degree in special education from the College of Education. He continued his educational endeavors as a Spartan attending graduate school and received his master's degree in School Administration.
After graduation, Dean went on to work in the education field. In 1983, he was named the "Outstanding Special Education Teacher in Michigan" by the Council for Exceptional Children because of his work with the Marvin E. Beekman Center in Lansing. Upon receiving this award, Dean became the Director of Special Olympics for the Lansing Area where he spent years coaching, fundraising, and transporting children to various Special Olympic Events.
In the early 1990s, Dean transitioned from educator to business owner, while keeping his primary focus on helping special needs children and giving back to the community. In 1990, he co-authored the National Minimum Standards for Special Education School Bus Operations and in 1991, Dean Transportation, Inc. was established. Currently, Dean is the President and CEO of Dean Transportation Inc., Dean Management Services Inc., and Dean Trailways of Michigan. Dean Transportation serves school districts, intermediate school districts, and public transit agencies throughout the State of Michigan and has become one of the largest privately-owned transportation companies in the country. They have revolutionized the Specialized Transportation industry specifically for the disabled, have been recognized twice as the top school bus company in North America, and have received two environmental awards for commitment to clean transportation.
While Dean has set new standards of excellence through his business endeavors, they are equally matched if not surpassed by his philanthropic work and achievements in the community. The depth and breadth of his involvement is unparalleled. Most recently, his dedication and love for community service, his alma mater and MSU Athletics has come full-circle with the Lansing Promise. He not only serves as Chair for the Board, but he has been instrumental in connecting the MSU football program to the Lansing School District to serve as mentors for the middle school youth. For all of this work, Dean has received numerous awards including the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission Lifetime Achievement Award, the Alumni Club of Mid-Michigan Spartan Hero Award and the NAACP Community Service Award. These honors and awards reflect his passion for serving the community and his hard work and dedication continue to positively affect many lives in the Greater Lansing area.
The Scholar-Athlete Awards were presented to the individual from each team who has reached at least junior academic status, has received a minimum of one varsity letter, and while meeting these requirements, maintains the highest cumulative grade point average on their team.
