Northwestern Sweeps Series With Win in Twinbill Nightcap
4/27/2019 5:46:00 PM | Softball
SPARTAN SYNOPSIS
No. 14 Northwestern executed the series sweep by taking the nightcap of a Saturday doubleheader, 10-1 in five innings.Â
Â
The Wildcat bats were consistent from first pitch to last, putting multiple runs on the board in all but the fourth inning, rattling off 14 hits in the game. Maeve Nelson hit two homers and finished 3-for-4 on the day with four RBI. Morgan Nelson, Morgan Newport, and Lily Novak each had two base hits a well. The Spartans saw a third different starting pitcher from the deep NU pitching staff, as Kaley Winegarner tossed a complete game, allowing just two base hits.
Â
Melanie Baccay hit her third home run of the season to account for the Spartan scoring. Alli Walker started the game – her fourth appearance in as many games this week – and went a combined four innings, coming back in for the fourth and fifth innings. McKenna Gregory, the game one starter, pitched the third inning, allowing two hits.
Â
NU improves its record to 41-7 on the season with a Big Ten best 20-0 mark heading into the final weekend, where it will play Minnesota, which has lost just once in Big Ten play. MSU (15-32) heads to Rutgers for a three-game series with a spot in the Big Ten Tournament on the line.Â
