
Wrestling Wraps Weekend at 2019 U.S. Open

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Michigan State wrestling program wrapped up its trip to the 2019 Marine Corps U.S. Open this past weekend as seven members of the program aimed to give themselves a shot at qualifying for one of three U.S. National Teams. Overall, Michigan State had members of the program compete in the Junior Greco-Roman open, the Junior Freestyle open, and the Senior Freestyle open.

In attendance for the Spartans were returning All-American Rayvon Foley, Cameron Caffey, Peyton Omania, Brad Wilton, Layne Malczewski, Nathan Atienza, and assistant coach Wynn Michalak. Foley, Caffey, Omania, and Wilton each competed in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle, while Malczewski, Atienza, and Michalak had their focus set solely on Freestyle competition.

Foley placed third at 57kg in the Junior Freestyle open to qualify for the Junior Freestyle World Team Trials. Michalak took seventh at 97kg in the Senior Freestyle open to qualify for the Senior Freestyle World Team Trials. The trials for both teams will take place in Raleigh, North Carolina with the Junior Freestyle trials starting on Friday, May 17 and the Senior Freestyle trials starting on Saturday May 18.

Wilton just missed on a chance to qualify for the Junior Freestyle Trials after losing in the blood round at 92kg. Caffey was defeated at 86kg by eventual champion Pat Downey in round one, but bounced back to finish 4-2 with a loss in the blood round.
