EAST LANSING – The Michigan State women's golf team is in a tie for fourth place after Monday's opening round of the NCAA East Lansing Regional at Forest Akers West. The Spartans shot a 5-over-par 293, which is tied with Indiana. Kent State, the region's No. 3 seed, leads the field at 6-under-par 282. Arizona is 2-over-par 290 and in second place, followed by Illinois in third at 4-over-par 292.

"I think we came out a little slow out of the gates," MSU head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll said. "I wasn't happy about that but it's a different atmosphere playing at home with so many people surrounding these kids that they know, and our routine is a little different not getting in the van all together and certain places. We're trying to alter that a little bit and make them feel as comfortable as they normally do on the road."
Pimnipa Panthong of Kent State led the field with a 4-under-par 68, which is tied for the sixth-lowest round at Forest Akers West.
Freshman Haylin Harris led the Spartans with a career-best 3-under-par 69 and stands in second place. Harris was one of just two players in the field of 96 to card a round in the 60s.
"I've had a couple of rounds recently in the 70s and I hadn't broken the barrier of 60s yet in a college tournament, so I really wanted that, and I finally got it today, so it was pretty exciting," Harris said.
Harris, like the rest of the Spartans, started the day on the 10th hole. She was 2-under-par at the turn with the help of seven pars and two birdies. She was 1-under-par on the last nine holes, picking up three more birdies.
"I've come a long way since the beginning and I'm usually used to coming in a little shaky on my rounds and I've grown so much since the beginning of the year," Harris said. "I've learned how to finish stronger and it's just been kind of fun to see my progress."
Allyson Geer-Park was 1-over-par 73 and is tied for 21st place. Geer-Park was 2-over-par through nine, but a birdie and four pars over the next five holes helped her get to 1-under-par in the second half of her round.
Yurika Tanida was 3-over-par through eight holes and then recorded 10 consecutive pars to end the day. Her 3-over-par 75 put her in 35th place.
Paz Marfa Sans shot a 4-over-par 76 and is tied for 43rd place.
Sydney Naro is tied for 81st palce at 8-over-par 80.
This year's NCAA Regional at Forest Akers West is the third at the course and first since 2002.
"I think our players will feel a little bit more comfortable tomorrow," Slobodnik-Stoll said. "We're going to have a nice meal tonight and they're going to get a good rest, but today was an early morning. We came out to the golf course at 6:45am so their alarms we set for something in the 5:00 am and it's just an early morning. Hopefully, we'll get a chance to maybe sleep in a little bit longer tomorrow and we'll be ready tomorrow.
The Spartans will tee off Tuesday from hole No. 1 between 9:09 – 9:53 a.m.
