EAST LANSING, Mich. --Â Michigan State University had three student-athletes selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) At-Large Academic All-America Teams. Junior swimmer junior Scott Piper was a First Team selection, while senior swimmer Courtney Aycock and redshirt freshman wrestler Cameron Caffey earned Second Team honors.
The at-large teams for the Google Cloud Academic All-America program include the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming & diving, tennis and water polo for both men and women, as well as beach volleyball, bowling, field hockey and rowing for women, and volleyball and wrestling for men.
Piper, a junior from Naperville, Illinois, qualified for the 2020 Olympic Trials at the USA Winter Nationals back in December, and also has maintained a 4.000 GPA as a biosystems engineering major. At the 2019 Big Ten Championships, he broke the school record in both the 200 IM (1:46.42) and 200 fly (1:42.73). Piper also recorded six first-place finishes throughout the season. He is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and is also in line to earn Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honors for the second consecutive season. Â
Aycock, a senior from Knoxville, Tennessee, earned Second Team honors with her 4.000 GPA in kinesiology. She owns the second-fastest time in MSU history in the 200 free (149.91) and sixth-fastest in the 100 free (50.73) in MSU's record book. At the 2019 SASS Academic Excellence Gala, Aycock was awarded with the prestigious President's Award which is given to the male and female graduating senior with the highest cumulative GPA.
Piper is the third Spartan men's swimmer to earn the prestigious Academic All-America honor. David Zoltowski was a Second Team honoree in 2015, while Michael Brown was a First Team pick in both 1983 and 1984. Aycock is also the third Spartan women's swimmer to earn Academic All-America honors, joining Julie Farrell (1991, second team) and Stephanie Anisko (2003, First Team).Â
Caffey, a Carbondale, Illinois native, joins Aycock on the second team and becomes the Spartan wrestling program's first CoSIDA Academic All-America selection. Caffey boasts a 4.000 grade point average as a computer engineering major at Michigan State. In his first year of competition as a Spartan, Caffey amassed a 32-9 record on the mat alongside a 13-5 record in the Big Ten and a 19-4 record in tournaments. Caffey was an NCAA qualifier in 2019 and went 2-2 in his first trip to the championships. In April, Caffey was named a member of the United States Junior Greco-Roman wrestling team that will represent the United States in Tallinn, Estonia in August.
Also named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans for the Spartans for the 2018-19 academic year were Samantha McLean (Third Team, Volleyball), Cole Chewins (First Team, Football), and Dan Chmielewski (Third Team, Baseball).
