EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State fifth-year senior offensive tackle Cole Chewins has been named to the Wuerrfel Trophy Watch List. Known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," the Wuerrfel Trophy is presented annually to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. The award is named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida.
A two-time Academic All-American and three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, Chewins is currently pursuing a master's degree in finance. He graduated with his bachelor's degree in finance last December. The 6-8, 303-pound native of Clarkston, Michigan, garnered first-team Academic All-America accolades in 2017 and was named to the second team in 2018. He is also a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
A veteran on MSU's offensive line and a member of the team's Eagles leadership council, Chewins has played in 37 career games, including 25 starts at left tackle.
Off the field, Chewins has been active in the community, visiting elementary schools as part of the team's involvement in the "Lansing Promise" program, as well as volunteering at events for the Children's Miracle Network and MSU's Great Dairy Adventure.
The winner of the Wuerrfel Trophy will be announced in December and is presented each February in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
