No. 7 Spartan Soccer Opens the Season Hosting SIUE

EAST LANSING, Mich. -Â No. 7 Michigan State men's soccer opens the 2019 season with Futbol Football Friday, opening action against SIUE at 1 p.m. The Spartan football team will then open the season against Tulsa at 7 p.m.
In the season opener, MSU will welcome back former assistant coach Cale Wassermann, who is in his first season as the head coach at SIUE.
The Spartans are looking to replace three of their top five leading scorers, including Ryan Sierakowski and DeJuan Jones were both taken in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft.

LOOKING AT THE POLLS
Michigan State men's soccer team was voted No. 7 in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll, as announced by the United Soccer Coaches.
The Spartans finished the 2018 season with an overall record of 14-5-4 and a 4-2-2 Big Ten record earning a trip to the NCAA College Cup for the first time since 1968. MSU ended the season ranked No. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches poll and was one of three Big Ten teams to finish in the top 10 along with Maryland (No. 1) and Indiana (No. 3).
Three other Big Ten schools join the Spartans in the initial poll, with two conference foes joining MSU in the top 10. Defending national champion Maryland tops the preseason poll at No. 1 with Indiana following in at No. 2. Michigan closes out the poll at No. 24. Wisconsin also earned 13 votes.
This season, the Spartans will face five teams ranked in the preseason top 25, including non-conference opponents Akron (No. 3) and Notre Dame (No. 9). The Spartans will host No. 9 Notre Dame under the lights on Sept. 24 and will take on No. 3 Akron on the road on Oct. 15 in a re-match of the NCAA National Semifinal game.
SCOUTING SIUE
This will be the sixth meeting in program history between the two schools, with the series tied at 2-2-1. In the last meeting between the two programs, MSU defeated SIUE, 1-0, on the road with a first-half goal from midfielder Giuseppe Barone.
SIUE opens their season in East Lansing after being voted fourth in the Mid-American Conference preseason poll. Last season, the Cougars finished the season with a 9-5-4 record and 1-3-1 mark in conference play, ending their 2018 campaign with a loss to Akron, 2-1, in the MAC tournament quarterfinals.
SIUE is led by senior forward Lachlan McLean, who led the team in points (23), goals (9), assists (5) and shots (65) last season.
The Cougars are coached by first-year head coach Cale Wassermann, who was an assistant coach at Michigan State for four seasons.
TURNING PRO
Three former Michigan State men's soccer players were drafted on the first day of the Major League Soccer SuperDraft in Chicago on Jan. 11, 2019. Senior forward DeJuan Jones led the way as the 11th overall pick, drafted by the New England Revolution.
For the first time ever, the Spartans had two players drafted in the first round as fellow senior forward Ryan Sierakowski was drafted 23rd overall by the Portland Timbers. Senior goalkeeper Jimmy Hague was the sixth pick of the second round (30th overall), taken by FC Cincinnati. Hague will see a familiar face when he arrives in Cincinnati with former Spartan great Fatai Alashe on the roster.Â
Last season, Ken Krolicki was the first Spartan drafted since defender Zach Carroll in 2016 when he was chosen as the 53rd overall pick, chosen as the seventh player in the third round.
In 2014, three Spartans signed to play for MLS with Fatai Alashe being chosen fourth overall, the highest ever for MSU. Jay Chapman a signed a homegrown contract with Toronto FC, while Adam Montague was taken in the third round by the Vancouver Whitecaps.
