Spartans Ranked No. 7 in United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll

Three Big Ten teams are ranked in the top 10.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's soccer team was voted No. 7 in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll, as announced on Tuesday by the United Soccer Coaches.
The Spartans finished the 2018 season with an overall record of 14-5-4 and a 4-2-2 Big Ten record earning a trip to the NCAA College Cup for the first time since 1968. MSU ended the season ranked No. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches poll and was one of three Big Ten teams to finish in the top 10 along with Maryland (No. 1) and Indiana (No. 3).
Three other Big Ten schools join the Spartans in the initial poll, with two conference foes joining MSU in the top 10. Defending national champion Maryland tops the preseason poll at No. 1 with Indiana following in at No. 2. Michigan closes out the poll at No. 24. Wisconsin also earned 13 votes.
This season, the Spartans will face five teams ranked in the preseason top 25, including non-conference opponents Akron (No. 3) and Notre Dame (No. 9). The Spartans will host No. 9 Notre Dame under the lights on Sept. 24 and will take on No. 3 Akron on the road on Oct. 15 in a re-match of the NCAA National Semifinal game.
MSU has a pair of Hermann Trophy Watch List honorees in senior midfielder Giuseppe Barone and redshirt-junior defender Patrick Nielsen. Barone is the reigning Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and a first-team All-American selection last season.
The Spartans begin action on Sunday, Aug. 18 in exhibition at UIC at 7 p.m. In its only home exhibition, Michigan State will face Butler on Tuesday, Aug. 30 at 5 p.m. and will conclude the preseason at Xavier on Friday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m.
