TOLEDO, Ohio – Three Spartans placed in the top 10 as the Michigan State women's golf team took third place at the season-opening Glass City Invitational in Toledo, Ohio. The Spartans shot an 8-over-par 296 in Monday's final round at the historic Inverness Club and finished the tournament 15-over-par 879 (288-295-296), nine shots back of first-place Florida.

"I think this is what we'd call a veteran team now and our expectations are high," MSU head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll said. "We did a lot of good stuff the last two days. We had one freshman in the lineup, which has to be intimidating to play your first tournament at Inverness. The potential is there for us, we just need to put the pieces together. We have a deep team so it will be a battle each week to get into the lineup."
The 13-team tournament included eight teams that played in last year's NCAA Tournament.
"It was a privilege to play this course," Solobodnik-Stoll said. "It's such a historic course and it reminded me of being with Ally at Augusta last year."
Yurika Tanida had the best finish of her career as she tied for fourth place at 1-over-par 217 (74-69-74) to lead all Spartans. Allyson Geer-Park tied for sixth place at 3-over-par 219 (71-74-74) and Paz Marfa Sans was one shot back in ninth place at 4-over-par 220 (70-76-74). All three players carded 2-over-par 74s in Monday's final round.
Tanida finished six shots back of the individual champ, Natalie Srinivasan, of Furman, who was 5-under-par 211.
"Yurika works very hard," said Slobodnik-Stoll. "She's in her third year now and we've seen her make progress each season. Yurika is a very dedicated student of the game, so it's very gratifying to see her do well."
Freshman Nina Rissi shot a 4-over-par 76 on Monday and was 9-over-par 225 (73-76-76) for the tournament, which put her in 31st place.
Sophomore Valery Plata recorded her lowest round of the tournament with a 2-over-par 74 on Monday. She was 14-over-par 230 (78-78-74) for the tournament.
Haylin Harris tied for the best finish of any player competing as an individual as she was 5-over-par 221 (73-74-74), which put the sophomore in a tie for 15th place.
Senior Catherine McEvoy also played as an individual and finished tied for 63rd at 20-over-par 236 (76-81-79).
Michigan State will be back in action for its annual home tournament starting Sunday as the Spartans host the 36th Mary Fossum Invitational, Sept. 22-23, at Forest Akers West.
