Piot Leads Spartans Through Two Rounds of the Inverness Intercollegiate

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Michigan State men's golf team is in eighth place after two rounds of play on Monday at the Inverness Intercollegiate at Toledo's Inverness Country Club. Leading the way for the Spartans is junior James Piot, who is just two shots off the lead at even-par 142 (69-73) and tied for third place in an elite field.

As a team, the Spartans are 25-over-par 593 (289-304) among a competitive group of 15 teams, putting them just five strokes behind fifth-place LSU. Tennessee, which won last year's tournament, is in the lead at 7-over-par 575 (293-282).
Piot's opening round 2-under-par 69 tied for the second-lowest score of the day. He was 2-over-par through four holes and then didn't record a bogey the rest of the way, carding four birdies and 10 pars. The junior shot a 2-over-par 73 in round two.
Freshman Bradley Smithson shot a pair of 3-over-par 74s as his 6-over-par 148 puts him in a tie for 29th place.
Troy Taylor II had one of the best opening rounds in the field with a 1-under-par 70. He shot a 9-over-par 80 in round two and is tied for 34th at 8-over-par 150.
Zach Rosendale (81-77) and Andrew Walker (76-82) are tied for 75th place at 16-over-par 158.
Piot is one of five players tied for third place. He'll enter Tuesday's final round two shots back of the leader, Auburn's Andrew Kozan, who's 2-under-par 140 (68-72).
The third round of the tournament is schedule to get underway on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. with players teeing off from the first and 10th tees. ESPN3 will carry a live stream of the event beginning at noon.
