INDEPENDENCE, Minn. – The Michigan State men's golf team concluded the Gopher Invitational under wet and windy conditions on Monday at Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minnesota. The Spartans finished the event tied for 12th place at 29-over-par 881 (290-291-300). Baylor, which won the tournament by two strokes at 4-under-par 848 (281-279-288), and second-place Texas A&M were the only teams to finish under par.

"It was maybe our worst week in a couple years, but there's a reason for it – we had some guys battling injuries and some that just didn't play well," MSU head coach Casey Lubahn said. "It adds up fast against a field comprised of teams that made the NCAA Tournament. When you're playing some of the best teams in the country you have to play your best and we didn't do that."
Sophomore Troy Taylor II was the top Spartan finisher, tying for 19th place at 3-over-par 216 (70-72-74). Taylor had the lowest score among Spartans in all three rounds, including his 3-over-par 74 on Monday.
"I thought Troy played better than he scored," Lubahn said. "He was really steady all week and has been so far this year. We have to get more guys playing like he did today."
Andrew Walker carded a 4-over-par 75 in Monday's final round and ended the tournament 10-over-par 223 (73-75-75) and tied for 51st place. James Piot (73-72-79) and Landon Ernst (77-72-75) both finished 11-over-par 224 and in 54th place.
Freshman Bradley Smithson finished 14-over-par 227 (74-77-76).
Arkansas' William Buhl won the individual title by one stroke at 6-under-par 207 (68-67-72).
Next up for the Spartans will be the Inverness Intercollegiate, Sept. 23-24 at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
