MSU’s Winning Streak Halted by No. 22 Northwestern
1/23/2020 10:21:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Freshman guard Moira Joiner leads the Spartans in scoring for the second-straight game.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's basketball had its three-game winning streak snapped by No. 22 Northwestern, 76-48, on Thursday night at the Breslin Center. The Wildcats were relentless on both the offensive and defensive ends of the ball to stop the Spartans.
MSU celebrated all of its women's sports programs on National Girls and Women in Sports Day, with all the programs doing demonstrations on the Breslin Center concourse before the game, and recognizing them on the court at halftime.
Michigan State falls to 11-8 overall and 4-4 in Big Ten games, while Northwestern improves to 17-2 overall an 7-1 in conference games, maintaining their perch atop the league standings tied with Iowa.
For the second-straight game, the Spartans were led by freshman guard Moira Joiner, who scored 17 points, draining five 3-pointers for the second game in a row, to go along with two assists and four rebounds. Redshirt-sophomore guard Claire Hendrickson also added a career-high tying eight points, while senior forward Nia Hollie and freshman forward Taiyier Parks both scored six points. Parks led MSU on the glass with seven rebounds.
Northwestern was led by 22 points from both Lindsey Pulliam and Veronica Burton.
Both teams got off to a rough start with Northwestern missing its first five shots and MSU starting 1-for-7. Turnovers also plagued MSU with four miscues in the first four minutes. The Wildcats used a 8-0 run take a 14-7 lead with 1:14 left in the quarter, leading to a Spartan timeout. An Abi Schied 3-pointer put NU up by double figures for the first time at 17-7 to end the period.
The Northwestern defense continued to be a problem for the Spartans, forcing 13 turnovers in the first half. The Spartans looked to claw back into it behind the sharp-shooting of Joiner, making it a single-digit deficit at 32-23 with under a minute remaining in the half. In the first 20 minutes, Joiner went 4-for-4 from long range with 12 points.
In the third quarter, the Wildcat offense did not let up, scoring 10 of the first 12 points of the period to take a 43-25 lead. The Northwestern offense was just too much for MSU, as the Wildcats out-scored the Spartans, 26-9, in the period.
Hendrickson provided a spark off the bench with five-straight points midway through the final period. Thursday was only the second time in sophomore guard Nia Clouden's career that she did not score.
Michigan State concludes its grueling three-game week at No. 19 Iowa on Sunday, Jan. 26. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
