Men's Tennis Toppled by Penn, 7-0

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's tennis fell to Penn, 7-0, Friday afternoon inside Penn's Tennis Center in Philadelphia.

"It was a tough match today against Penn," said MSU men's tennis head coach Gene Orlando. "We'll take the positives from this match and carry them over into our next match this Sunday at Cornell."
Doubles
The Spartans and Quakers got things started in doubles action, with Penn taking the doubles point after wins on all three courts. Kevin Zhu and Zach Smith put the Quakers on the board first, dropping MSU freshman duo Drew Keene and Jarreau Campbell on court two, 6-3. Freshman Kazuki Matsuno and junior Josh Mukherjee, who came into the dual with a 3-1 record in the third slot, took on Penn's Harsh Parikh and Aditya Gupta on court three. The Spartan duo took a late 6-5 lead, before falling in a tiebreaker to give Penn the doubles point. John Carlin and Anthony Pero dropped a 6-4 decision to Jason Hilderbrandt and Edoardo Graziani in the top slot to finish out doubles.
Singles
MSU fell behind early in singles play, dropping first sets on all six courts to the Quakers. Pero took on No. 88-ranked Kevin Zhu on court two and fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, giving Penn a 2-0 lead. The Quakers clinched the match with wins on courts three and four. Sophomore Carson Gates was defeated by Hilderbrandt on court three, 6-2, 6-2, and Mukherjee fell to Gupta (6-3, 6-0) on court four for the Spartans.
On court six, Campbell fell to Penn's Max Cancilla, 6-1, 6-3 and Carlin lost to Edoardo Graziani in the top slot, 7-5, 6-4. Matsuno battled for the Spartans in the fifth slot with Parikh. Matsuno forced a first set tiebreaker, but fell 7-6 and fell in the second set, 6-4.

The Spartans make the drive to Ithaca to take on Cornell on Sunday, Feb. 2. Match time is slated for 12 p.m. inside the Reis Tennis Center.
