Spartan Hockey Announces Captains for 2020-21 Season

EAST LANSING – Michigan State hockey head coach Danton Cole has announced the team captains for the upcoming 2020-21 season. Seniors Tommy Apap and Tommy Miller will serve as captains, while junior Dennis Cesana and senior Mitchell Lewandowski will be assistant captains.
It will be Apap's second year as captain and the first time wearing a letter for Miller, Cesana and Lewandowski.
Apap was voted MSU's most improved player last season after recording career highs in goals (7), assists (5) and points (12). The native of Bloomfield Hills is a force in the faceoff circle as he ranked second in the Big Ten last season in winning percentage (.587), while leading the league in total faceoff wins (389). The management major was also an Academic All-Big Ten selection last season.
Miller has never missed a game in his MSU career, having appeared in 108 consecutive contests. The defenseman from West Bloomfield put up nine points last season, including two goals (one game-winner) and seven assists. Miller is a 2020 Academic All-Big Ten honoree that is majoring in packaging.
Cesana was an All-Big Ten second team selection a season ago after ranking second on the team and third among Big Ten defensemen in points with 22. The defenseman's 15 assists were second most on the team, while his career-high seven goals tied for second among the league's blueliners. Cesana's three power-play goals tied for second on the team and first among B1G defensemen. The advertising management major from Providence, R.I., was also an Academic All-Big Ten selection last season.
Lewandowski, an advertising management major, has earned All-Big Ten honorable mention recognition in each of his three seasons wearing the Green and White. He ranks in the top 10 among NCAA active career leaders in a trio of categories, including: second in goals with 43; tied for first in game-winning goals with 10; and ninth in points with 88. Last season, the native of Clarkston post his third straight season with at least 20 points, recording eight goals and 12 assists.
"These are great young men on and off the ice with excellent leadership," said Cole. "They are great Spartans.
"The adding of leadership to some of these young men and watching them grow over these years into that role that is recognized by their peers is rewarding. It's probably one of the things I really like to see most in coaching."
The Spartans are scheduled to begin the 2020-21 season Nov. 19-20 when they host Arizona State at Munn Ice Arena.
